Newspaper clipping presenting three reader-submitted versions of “Better Than Sex Cake”; this file covers Version 1.

Ingredients

  • 1 package yellow cake mix (2-layer size, pudding-in-the-mix style)
  • 20-ounce can crushed pineapple
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6-ounce package vanilla pudding mix (regular or instant)
  • 8-ounce container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 cup flaked coconut, approximately
  • 1 cup chopped pecans, approximately
  • Optional: maraschino cherries

Steps

  1. Prepare cake according to package directions and bake in a 9x13-inch pan. Meanwhile combine crushed pineapple (undrained) with sugar and bring to boiling. Boil five minutes.
  2. Immediately after cake has been removed from oven, pour syrup over hot cake. Allow cake to cool completely.
  3. Prepare pudding mix according to package directions. (Some recipes suggest folding coconut into pudding.) Spread pudding over cooled cake.
  4. Top with whipped topping and sprinkle with coconut and pecans. If desired, garnish with maraschino cherries.

Notes

Variations: Slice three bananas and arrange slices over cake after adding syrup and cooling; continue as directed with pudding and whipped topping. The frozen whipped topping may be replaced with one cup whipping cream whipped until stiff with 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar and one teaspoon vanilla. If desired, toast the flaked coconut.
