Newspaper clipping presenting three reader-submitted versions of “Better Than Sex Cake”; this file covers Version 2. Chocolate chips and sour cream enrich the batter of this version.

Ingredients

  • 1 package yellow cake mix (2-layer size)
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup water
  • 3-ounce package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 8-ounce carton sour cream
  • 6-ounce package chocolate chips
  • 4 ounces German sweet chocolate, grated, or 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, grated
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Steps

  1. In large bowl of an electric mixer, combine cake mix, eggs, oil, water, pudding mix and sour cream. Beat until smooth, about two minutes. Fold in chocolate chips and, if desired, nutmeats (pecans).
  2. Bake in a greased and floured tube pan at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes or until done.
  3. If desired, drizzle with confectioners’ sugar glaze or top with cream cheese frosting. Cake may be refrigerated or frozen if desired.

Notes

This final version [sic — referring to the newspaper feature overall] of Better Than Sex Cake also has been called “Sex in a Pan” and “Next to Robert Redford.” Thanks for the recipe go to Cheri Weiner (Omaha), Marge Gillespie (Missouri Valley, Iowa), and Judith S. Robinson (Papillion).
