Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 3 eggs (pinch of salt)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 4 cups flour
Date Filling
- 1 lb dates, cut up (about 2 1/4 cups)
- 1 cup nuts
- 1 1/2 cups sugar

Steps
- Mix the dough and roll thin, about 1/4 inch.
- Date Filling: combine the filling ingredients and cook until thick.
- Spread the date filling over the rolled dough and roll up like a jelly roll. Chill in the refrigerator at least 4 hours or more; may also be frozen.
- Slice like a jelly roll and bake at 350°F for 10-15 min.
Notes
- Contributor name is a best-effort reading of the cursive signature (“Lillie Grancer”) — worth double-checking against the physical card, similar to the “Lillie Grance”/“Tillie Grancer” names on nearby cards which may all be the same person spelled slightly differently across cards.
- The date filling’s sugar and water quantities had a small mark/possible correction over the fractions — recorded as written (1 1/2 cups each), but worth a glance at the original.
