No Yeast Bread (All-Purpose Flour Version)
- Source
- Grandma's Notepad (handwritten, pp. 43-44)
- Cook
- 400°F, 30-40 min
Ingredients
- 4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 1/2 cup water, room temperature
- 2 tsp vinegar
- 1 Tbsp melted butter
Steps
- Oven 400°F.
- In a bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
- In a 2-cup measuring cup, combine the water and vinegar.
- While stirring, add the water mixture to the flour. Stir until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface; knead for 2-3 min.
- Shape into a flat round disk about 1 1/2 inches high. Place on a baking sheet or pizza pan.
- Dip a sharp knife into flour, then cut an X on top of the loaf.
- Bake at 400°F for 30-40 min, or until golden brown.
- If desired, brush the top with milk halfway through baking.
- When done, remove and, while still hot, brush with melted butter.
Notes
- Do not use a loaf pan for this one — the shaped disk is meant to be only about 1 1/2 inches high, baked on a sheet, so it cooks through properly.
- This recipe spans two notepad pages (43-44, marked “Bread cont. pg 2”) — merged here into one file.
- A shorter, simpler no-yeast bread recipe (self-raising flour) appears right before this one in the same notepad — kept separate, see
no-yeast-bread-self-raising.md.
